Bboy Music Mondays | #2 | Cavern - Liquid Liquid

My slice of life this week is about Liquid Liquid's Cavern. I really hate cheesy things and sayings like "we were brought together by music" but that's exactly what happened in this story, unfortunately. This story happened a few years back but I thought I'd write about it this week because when I had gone to the movies, one of the trailers - the movie called 'Chef' - had this song playing in the background. All I could think of was this story throughout the trailer.

It's actually ironic that this story unfolded whilst Cavern was playing in the background. If you stop and think about it, a cavern is a dark, gloomy, hollow empty space that often leads to a dead end. Even when I listen to the lyrics, I can't make sense of it. It's like a black hole. But in spite all that, I got to know a really cool dude.

Cavern by Liquid Liquid

...

One summer I decided to attend summer school to speed up my degree a little bit. I was on my way home when I heard music blazing from the studios. I recognized the un-mainstream, funky, old-school beats and immediately did a 180 towards the studio. There were bboys and bgirls practising and had I known, I would have bought my gear too. Instead, I was stuck by the doorway gaping at them practising and feeling spiteful of what I wore.

A bboy saw me standing there and told me I had to leave. He was joking, of course. But he told me with such bursting ego that a lot of girls had been coming in to watch the boys, trying to get their numbers and then end up disrupting their practice. What? I thought bboys liked that? But because of what he said, I secretly had this teensy bit of respect for him. Finally, a bboy who's all about dancing.

It was a little awkward though, being mistaken for a crazed-bboy-fan-girl. To get my dignity back I was about to tell him that I break too when he recognized me first. He knew I was in the same dance crew with a friend of his and he's seen me around before. Alright! Dignity restored!

He became more welcoming when he knew I wasn't there to stalk his boys and that I was genuinely there out of interest in dance. He sat to chat with me and we got to know each other a little. We made fun of friends, as you do. It's true that people talk about you when you're not there. When our conversation died, Cavern started playing in the studio. I was drumming the beat quietly on my knees but when the drums got heavy at the minute mark, so did my drumming. It just so happen he was doing the exact same thing. We both realised this, looked at each other and had a quick WTF-are-you-doing-copying-me moment. He asked me how I knew this totally un-mainstream song and when I told him I was totally a bgirl, he pretty much married me with the look he had on his face.

The End... of cheesy story.

Peaces :) x.
