2013 Homegrown | NZ Bboy Competition

What went down recently in New Zealand's bboy scene was the Homegrown Bboy Battles which was incorporated in a huge event that mainly celebrates New Zealand-made music. These bboy battles were 2 v 2.

During the Heats I found the Lokomotion and Dope Dealers round really amazing. Both teams were mean, and I had always been quite the LoKomotion supporter but Dope Dealers - they dealin' with Dopeness yo'. Especially with their second battle with Juse; Stretchmark had it going on. Not to mention his round with Voltron, he had a no-hand windmill gain momentum in the middle of it. That was dope. Again, I enjoyed it when Lokomotion went up against Voltron, but their commandoes are always misplaced I think lol. Work on it boys! Is it the kiwi way to battle and be supportive at the same time?! Lol. Love Rock Y.T.'s footwork.

The bar is always raised when Common Ground is around, such a troop of winners. What I liked about them  was they entered a rookie team (alongside their two other teams). When the rookie team were performing you can see the crew at the back just supporting them. I love that family vibe. The two boys were in need of polishing of course, but I can see that one has musicality and top rock down, while the other is in the process of obtaining some solid powers. I think this team was complimentary. They uhm, need to cut his hair - the dude with the long hair because he just looks like a rag doll being tossed around - no offence.

Common Ground is way too good lol. Grub-D and Acorn in one team, damn. That's too overpowering. When they had to go against each other during the heats - Common Ground 1 and Common Ground 2 - that was more entertaining than tense. They called each other's moves and teased each other, it was a different kind of battle. Need I remind anyone that both Grub-D and Acorn have experience in Red Bull BC One Competitions representing New Zealand?

Supreme Kids is another of my favourite local bboy crew. They've got some nice musicality going on most of the time. Their first battle was aight, but Broton was much better. They also had some mistakes and crashes here and there during the whole event, but I think they're still quite the commendable bboys when they're not making those mistakes.

There were a lot of outstanding bboys that day, but the finals eventually led to Common Ground 1 vs Common Ground 2 with Dope Dealers and Top Secret making it to the Semi-Finals. Common Ground 1 were creative, but Common Ground with Acorn and Grub-D were the obvious winners of the day, with their polishness and cleanliness. Props to both teams though, both are mad dope, charismatic and entertaining to watch. What kinda crew claims both 1st and 2nd places in a competition anyway?! Lol.

Peaces :)
