If I were to go there I'd want to learn writing and dj-ing.
I know that Lil Cesar opened this school with whole hearted intentions, to spread and educate people about the culture of hip hop. Perhaps I need to move on with times but to me, school was always an institution and hip hop was kind of like, a liberation from that stuff. So this formal learning of hip hop is pretty alien to me. I mean, Bboy Spot had something called an Academy, but I see that more as something very casual.
I find I need to question the school's experience of the hip hop culture. I think hip hop is something you live and experience step by step, but in a school/institution form, you go through these steps or "experiences" quite quickly either in 10 week slots or in terms. So there's the question of genuine attainment of the knowledge as opposed to having it given to you. I don't know. Am I too sceptical?! I'm not bad mouthing the idea, I think it's a wonderful idea. But if we look ahead, what will it become? Will it be an amazing school or a factory of mass produced hip hop artists?
I think this school is great in terms of being introduced to the culture. But once students begin to depend on it rather than going out there and immersing themselves to the actual culture, it can be quite degenerating of their potential creativity. I guess for now I'll sit back and watch what kind of reputation this school makes for itself, and enjoy the idea like everyone else - because, this is pretty bad ass I reckon! Heh.
