Ben Tafau on Bboying in South Korea | Asia NZ Foundation

In 2010, one of our local bboys, Ben Tafau, visited South Korea on behalf of the Asian New Zealand Foundation and underwent what must have been the meanest research project that has ever existed - researching the South Korean bboy culture. I would take a job like that any day. Jealous.

In his adventure he met many big players in the bboy scene such as the Gamblerz Crew and my favourite, the Rivers Crew. He met bboys like, Bruce Lee, Born and Jay Park, and even mix and mingled with strifetv videographer and interviewers, Dan and MisLee.

Ben walked through the history of the South Korean bboy scene where it started out misunderstood and seen with disdain, to become a huge part of the commercial and entertainment industries. Ben looked at the positive as well as the negative outlook on the establishment of the bboy culture in South Korea. Best of all - he found their secret for breeding some of the world's best bboys. Unfortunately, where ever you are in the world, it's all the same. Practice. Practice. Practice. Practice makes perfect. It's an old saying which speaks the truth. Except their discipline to practice is just a little something else...
